Mark your calendars for our annual Christmas Concert!
December 16 at 8:00 PM
St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley
The European colonies aren’t thought of as rich sources of repertoire, but in the past few decades a vast wealth of music has been found in Latin American cathedrals. Compositions by Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and colonial composers have been found in the archives of cathedrals in Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guatemala City, and many other Latin American cultural centers. These editions provide clear evidence that there was an exchange of musical culture that occurred between Spain and her colonies, which later formed a foundation for the music played and sung in the California missions.Joined by Bay Area instrumentalists,WAVE will perform Renaissance and Baroque music from New Spain (Latin America) composed by Cristóbal de Morales, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Francisco Guerrero, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Sebastián Durón, José de Torres, Franciso Capillas, Hernando Franco, Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, Juan Garcia Zéspedes, and Juan de Araujo.
