MUSIC FROM THE VENETIAN OSPEDALI
Tuesday, June 3 at 8:00 PM
The Women’s Antique Vocal Ensemble and chamber orchestra will perform music from the ospedali, or hospitals, of Venice, which ultimately transformed themselves from helping disabled and orphaned girls through the power of music into centers of music where only females were permitted to perform. Great composers like Vivaldi, Hasse, Galuppi, and Porpora worked at various ospedali in Venice during the 18th century and wrote music specifically for the young girls and women to perform.
This concert promotes our mission to highlight music composed or performed specifically by women. In this celebration of women in the arts we will be performing this concert at the Berkeley City Club, whose architect was the famed Julia Morgan.
